Taco Tuesday: Guisados Home Style Mexican Cooking

A craving for chips, salsa, and guacamole combined with Taco Tuesday led me to try Guisados Home Style Mexican Cooking in Taylorsville earlier this week. Tucked away from busy streets and nestled in a strip mall, Guisados is a hidden gem among the area’s restaurants. I learned about it from a Google search for Mexican restaurants compatible with my evening commute, and its 4.9 star reviews set it apart from its competition. My experience there matched the excellent reviews. While Tuesday evening was my first stop at Guisados, I look forward to many return visits.

Tacos sold à la carte are $2.99 each or $4.00 each for specialty tacos. However, on Taco Tuesday, Guisados offers a special of three tacos for $7.00. I welcomed the opportunity to sample several taco varieties, so I chose champiñones (sautéed mushrooms), calabacitas (sautéed zucchini with tomatoes, onions, and green chile), and pollo con rajas (sliced chicken and poblano pepper). Lime wedges, cilantro, diced onion, and three salsas are served separately to garnish the tacos according to your preference. I enjoyed all three tacos, but I preferred the calabacitas because of its satisfying blend of spicy and sweet flavors. While I chose tacos rich with vegetables, Guisados features many tacos with chicken, pork, or beef, so meat lovers will find tacos to their liking as well. I completed my meal with a side of refried beans and the highly anticipated chips, salsa, and guacamole. The refried beans were thick and savory, as was the guacamole as well. The chips were thick and crunchy, most likely house made although that wasn’t specified on the menu. It is worth nothing that all of Guisados’ salsas have a considerable amount of heat, which I liked, but diners who prefer milder salsas should start with small samples to determine which will be most to their liking.

If you’re looking for a new taco spot, whether it’s Tuesday or any other day of the week, I recommend giving Guisados a try. The reasonably priced food will surpass your expectations while the friendly ambiance and hospitality will make you feel at home.
