I discovered the downtown Salt Lake City location of The Break Sports Grill because of its proximity to Vivint Arena, and it became an easy place to have dinner before Utah Jazz games. Its closeness to several downtown venues makes it a good choice for dinner before other events as well. I was excited to return and order one of my favorite menu items before seeing an opera at Capitol Theatre. A sports bar and an opera might seem like an unlikely pairing, but the combination made for an enjoyable evening.
The Break provides a comfortable, casual environment with several screens on the wall to follow current sporting events. Music plays in the background that is an eclectic mix of pop, rock, country, and hip-hop, and the staff is prompt and friendly in taking care of you. The menu offers a variety of creative options that are full of flavor and texture. I previously have had the garlic burger, the coconut shrimp tacos, and the mac n’ cheese. I intentionally returned this time for a second round of the coconut shrimp tacos. The coconut breading is fried to a perfect crisp, and the tacos are garnished with coleslaw, pineapple salsa, pico de gallo, BK Sweet and Spicy sauce, and dill sauce. These flavors complement each other well and make the tacos a balanced blend of spicy and sweet. The tacos come with a side of chips and salsa. This salsa is milder than the sauce on the tacos, so it serves to cool down the tacos’ heat. I loved this dish both times that I had it, and I whole-heartedly recommend it when you visit the The Break Sports Grill.
